Biografia

David Allen is a professional musician and composer based in the United Kingdom, specialising in music for films.

Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England, David immersed himself from an early age as a clarinettist in the regional concert band and pianist in the county jazz band. He moved to Oxford and then to London to pursue his musical career, now working as a freelance composer, musical director and performer.

David studied music at the University of Oxford, where he held the organ scholarship at St Edmund Hall, and was awarded a first in both film music and music composition, studying with Andrew Gant and Robert Saxton. He studied the organ with Geoffrey Watson and John Wellingham, and became an Associate of the Royal College of Organists in 2009. He furthered his film music studies at the Royal College of Music, specialising in composition for screen, where he was tutored by Vasco Hexel and Francis Shaw.

David's music composition skills are wide-ranging - from neoconservative post-modernism to mainstream neoromanticism. His film music comprises of anything from traditional orchestral and small ensemble styles to synthesised and electronic music incorporating any genre as appropriate to the film to give each score that extra edge.

As a performer he has performed in venues ranging from Oxford's New Theatre, Worcester and Westminster Cathedrals, Edinburgh's Canongate Kirk, and various cathedrals in mainland Europe. He has  also worked as a conductor and musical director for music theatre productions and choirs, and has directed and composed for several productions at the famous Oxford Playhouse as well as the Southwark Playhouse and Theatre 503 in London.
