Masahiro Kobayashi

Masahiro Kobayashi began his career as a folk singer, and then became a scripwriter. A great admirer of François Truffaut, he directed his first film, Closing Time, in 1996, and subsequently made three films back to back which won awards at Cannes: Bootleg Film (1999) and Man Walking on Snow (2000) in Un certain regard, and Koroshi (2001) in the Director’s Fortnight. Presented in competition at Cannes in 2005, Bashing received the Grand Prix at Tokyo Filmex. Then, in 2007, Kobayashi won the Locarno Film Festival’s Golden Leopard for The Rebirth.
