During WW II the controversial German author Ernst Jünger was stationed in Paris as an officer in the German army. During the occupation the novelist/philosopher, who had Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau as his friends, kept a diary. He put down his thoughts on everyday events, but also his impressions and feelings about the war. Although Jünger had never really been a supporter of Hitler, he defended the aristocracy and the army like a true conservative. La guerre d'un seul homme is based on his war diaries and brings out the contrast between his contemplations and the coverage of the war. Scenes from the life of the Parisian beau monde are set against images of prisoners, arrests and the horrors of war. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
