Bajthay Péter, assistant lecturer at the Agricultural Academy of Magyaróvár, returns to Őssziget, his native village, to help flourish that place. Bajthay, his father, would not hear of him, an educated man, returning to do a peasant's job. Péter, however, does not change his mind. He wants his village to be in a position, in ten years' time, to be able to buy the lands its is now renting, to create, on those lands, a mechanised collective farming system. His plans fall though when the Bank terminates its contract with the village as it wants to sell the lands. In the village, there is a group of girls, all of them university students, helping peasants during summertime. Kató, their leader, is the daughter of the bank's director general, who, fallen in love with Péter during her summer work training, persuades her father to help the village in its plans, so things eventually take a turn for the better.
