Éva, daughter of Szendrey Péter, a famous opera singer, is a student at a sculptor's school in Paris. One day the news reach her on the radio that something has happened to her father. Because of the war, her trip to Pest is a long and tiring one. She meets her father, a broken man due to the unfaithfulness of his wife. He now is a second-rate clown singing in a circus. She sticks by her father. They live in dire straits in a suburban, poorly furnished little flat. Her father has by now become a drunkard. Éva has to stand in for him to perform in the circus. One day, she is visited by Judit, her friend and Radnóthy Tamás, a composer, Judit's boyfriend, who is electrified by his encounter with Éva, which helps him finish "Love fever", his new piece. Éva is also touched emotionally by the young man. Later the man turns out to be the one who has ruined the life of their family. Éva then decides to accept a contract abroad and leaves the country.
