Em Salem, Massachusetts, 1692, algumas jovens fazem "feitiços". Uma delas, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder), tinha se envolvido com John Proctor (Daniel Day-Lewis), um fazendeiro casado, quando trabalhou para ele, mas após o fim do caso foi despedida. Assim, desejava a morte de Elizabeth Proctor (Joan Allen), a esposa deste.
