Baseado no best-seller de Ann Patchett, conta a história de amor centrada numa famosa soprano (Julianne Moore), que viaja à América do Sul para dar um concerto privado numa festa de um magnata industrial japonês (Ken Watanabe). No auge da reunião de diplomatas e políticos, a mansão é assaltada por um grupo rebelde armado que exige a libertação dos seus camaradas presos. São feitas ameaças, perdem-se vidas, começa uma negociação tensa e segue-se um longo impasse. Enquanto estão presos na mansão, os reféns e seus captores, que falam línguas diferentes, são forçados a encontrar novas formas de comunicar. A música, especialmente as belíssimas árias cantadas pela personagem de Julianne Moore, desperta uma camaradagem comum e até faz florescer o amor, unindo as várias pessoas que criam inesperados laços, levando-as a ultrapassar as suas diferenças e a redescobrirem a sua humanidade. Everyone here behaved like nutjobs. First, there are terrorists, then there are tenors, suddenly it’s a friendly tea party and finally, it ends in a brutal shootout. I understood the idea behind the movie, but it was conveyed as if a bunch of losers came together and wanted to make fools out of everybody, so they shot whatever they wanted. But I was intrigued by the ending. Even though the opera voice wasn’t coming out of Julianne Moore’s mouth, at least I found out that there is an American opera singer Renée Fleming, who also learned to sing Rusalka in beautiful Czech. Hats off.

Beautiful operatic arias performed by Renée Fleming keep this film afloat. The story is probably at least partly inspired by real events, but it lacks suspense and does not seem very believable due to the illogical behavior of some characters. I see it at a meager three stars for the beautiful music, the lovely Julianne Moore, and the unrecognizably civil Sebastian Koch. (50%)
