The 47-year old Tibetan monk Chunzey lives in exile in the south of India. His spiritual master, Khensur Rinpoche, a respected and high lama, died four years ago. According to Tibetan beliefs he will be reincarnated before long. As his closest disciple, Chunzey is responsible to find the reincarnated lama and take care of him. A message arrives from Tibet about a boy with special gifts. Chunzey travels to Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama's place of exile, to consult him about the child. The Dalai Lama tells him the child is the one. To avoid the Chinese authorities' attention Chunzey travels to Tibet secretly to pick up the boy. After a few months he arrives in Kathmandu with his reincarnated master, who turns out to be a charismatic and naughty four-year old boy, who gets very attached to his new 'father'. In a monastery, the boy worthily undergoes his first ritual ceremony. Next, they travel on to Sarnath, North India, where the Dalai Lama lives. He consecrates the child to a monk in an emotional ceremony. After this, everybody acknowledges him as the reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche. But he is still a child, full of joy and jokes, preferring to play games. Chunzey, who used to be his disciple, is his keeper now. Together they move on to a monastery in South India, where Chunzey's mission will be completed. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
