In Uruguay the ‘Tupamaros’ are one of the few resistance movements that evolved from a guerilla group into an official political party. Since 1995, the 62-year-old Pepe Mujica defends their principles and views as an elected member of parliament. In Tupamaros, he is one of the most important protagonists reflecting the eventful history of the movement, that was founded during an armed robbery of the Uruguayan ‘Swiss Gun Club’ in 1963. By means of armed actions in ‘Robin Hood’ style the MLN-Tupamaros became the most well-known underground movement of Latin America, being a role-model for many ‘action groups’, also outside this continent. In the early seventies its members were incarcerated and tortured under the military dictatorship. In Tupamaros the leaders, who are all still politically active, tell their story in front of a camera for the first time. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
