First of a series of Neshat’s films exploring issues of gender in relation to the social structure of Islamic Iran. Turbulent’s main focus is the absence of women in relation to music in public space. This film takes the form of a musical duel between a male singer, performing a passionate love song with words, by the great Thirteenth-century mystic Rumi, (original voice of renowned Iranian singer Shahram Nazeri,) and Sussan Deyhim, the female singer delivering her own eclectic composition.
