The city of Tampere turned 180 years old on October 1st, 1959. Tampere Day has been celebrated since 1955. In honor of the fifth Tampere Day, Suomi-Filmi produced a short film for the City of Tampere. Directed by Kari Uusitalo (b. 1933), the film showcases many of the events of Tampere Day, including the construction site of the the School of Social Sciences, museums, exhibitions, the swimming hall, the radiotherapy home... The year 1959 was Erkki Lindfors's third year as city manager of Tampere. It could be said that in his time the working class city became a city of high culture. (Tampere Film Festival)
