Em um elegante hotel de Nova York está Nell Forbes (Marilyn Monroe), uma bela mas psicótica mulher que recentemente saiu de um sanatório. Após conseguir emprego como babá, ela passa a cuidar de Bunny (Donna Corcoran), a filha de um casal de hóspedes. Paralelamente outro hóspede, Jed Towers (Richard Widmark), um piloto de linha comercial, está chateado, pois Lyn Leslie (Anne Bancroft), a cantora do hotel com quem ele namorava, está insatisfeita com a relação. Jed vai ao seu encontro e tenta em vão reatar. Já no seu quarto ele vê Nell, que está no quarto defronte, e os dois começam a conversar. Porém quando Bunny surge Nell fica louca e manda a menina de volta para a cama aos berros, pois Nell está imaginando que Jed é um ex-noivo. Don't Bother to Knock is one of the five MM films of 1952. Another noir after Lang's Clash by Night. It was based on the 1951 novel "Mischief" by Charlotte Armstrong. Perhaps the only thing I can say about the film is that MM never became the queen of noir, but critics appreciated her portrayal of the unstable anti-hero and she was better positioned among the faces of 20th Century Fox for years to come.
