Situated on a cliff overlooking a small East German town in Saxony, stands Colditz Castle. It has stood on this site since the Middle Ages and has seen use as a workhouse and a mental institution. However, its place in history became assured during the Second World War, when it was Oflag IV-C, a prisoner-of-war camp for high-profile Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps.
Colditz was the camp from which no-one was meant to escape – but to some people, that just sounds like a challenge.
The escapes are ingenious, brave, exciting and even poignant, but it's the touching memories of daily life, letters from home, secretly-brewed hooch and staving off the boredom which reveal what it was really like to have been locked up inside the notorious castle.
This film explores the exciting stories of some of most daring escapes from Oflag IV-C, including the first British home run by Airey Neave and the incredible 'Naked Escape' which saw Pat Reid (on whose story the Colditz TV series was based) finally make it back to Britain.
