Billions (2016)

inglês The Big Short meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Unlike the said canine, this series didn’t bore me for a second, and not once did I struggle with microsleep. The cast was excellent, and I was drawn in by the story from the start. Thanks to having seen The Big Short a while back, I was surprisingly familiar with the world of finance, so the mention of shorting couldn’t throw me off. What's more - Metallica. I’m more than satisfied. ()

Season 1 (2016) (S01)

inglês I am very satisfied with the series after Season 1. The theme is clear: the world of big finance filled with illegal practices, which has become a sore spot for a lot of Americans after the not-so-distant recession. The story is built around a duel between a powerful financial tycoon and the State’s Attorney. The information that gradually floats to the surface affects the often-fanatical behavior of the two protagonists. I have to praise the great cast, atmosphere, writing and soundtrack. Although there were weaker moments here and there, it worked great as a whole and I'm already looking forward to the next season. ()

Piloto (2016) (S01E01)

inglês After watching the pilot episode, I knew I was in for a treat. This show set in the world of high finance is definitely up my alley. I'm thoroughly impressed with the cast and the storyline, and I'm eagerly anticipating a hefty dose of intrigue. I've always enjoyed stories without traditional heroes, and it looks like this one will have very few, if any. ()

Fechando o cerco (2016) (S01E02)

inglês The second episode didn't quite hit the mark for me. The story's pace seemed to slow down, and the level of intrigue wasn't as high as I had hoped. Thankfully, Mr. Hall's devious backstage maneuvers kept things interesting on that front. While Damian Lewis is one of my favorite actors, I have to admit that Paul Giamatti's portrayal of Chuck Rhoades makes his character even more compelling. ()

Sabor de juventude (2016) (S01E03)

inglês Alongside Paul Giamatti's stellar performance, Malin Akerman really stood out. I only knew her from a few average comedies, but her portrayal of Lara as a perfectly cold-hearted bitch was fantastic. The story had great pacing this time, and I was thoroughly entertained. ()

Short Squeeze (2016) (S01E04)

inglês The pace felt sluggish compared to the previous episode. While the plot wasn't uninteresting, it seemed stretched thin. The creators tried to juggle too many storylines, giving each one too little attention, making the episode feel inconsistent. Metallica was a highlight, but it's clear that James Hetfield should stick to music and leave the acting to others. ()

Que vida boa (2016) (S01E05)

inglês While the ongoing investigation by the Attorney kept things interesting, there was still something missing. The story could have benefited from a faster pace and a bit more excitement — S/M club visits alone don't cut it. The first and third episodes were great, so I’m not sure what went wrong here. ()

O acordo (2016) (S01E06)

inglês The episode had a unique atmosphere of uncertainty, which fit the tug-of-war over the deal perfectly. I wasn’t bored at all; the back-and-forth was quite entertaining, even though it ultimately boiled down to a classic case of “who's got the bigger one.” Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. ()

Tapa na cara (2016) (S01E07)

inglês I enjoyed this episode a bit more than the previous ones. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it might be due to the diversions from the financial world. I loved watching Lara trying to ground her sons in reality and Bobby's explosive outburst at the beginning. These moments added that missing spark I was looking for. ()

Quem é o traidor? (2016) (S01E08)

inglês Episode eight focused on two main storylines. The first revolves around the informant the Attorney's office managed to place inside Bobby's firm, while the second brings Axelrod's biggest secret to light. Given that it involves 9/11, I'm bracing for some serious drama, witch hunts, or even a bit of lynching in the upcoming episodes. ()

Onde o Donnie se meteu? (2016) (S01E09)

inglês Once again, the creators stuck to two main storylines. Both sides are deeply troubled by Donnie Caan's disappearance, while the Axelrod family faces an expected hate campaign. The episode had a great atmosphere, maintained a solid pace, and kept me thoroughly entertained. ()

Qualidade de vida (2016) (S01E10)

inglês A very solid episode with a great atmosphere. There was always something happening, even though I expected a much more melancholic tone for a "funeral" episode. Fortunately, the creators didn’t go the usual route. Instead, they filled the episode with engaging storylines and small victories for both sides, making it thoroughly enjoyable. ()

Pensamento mágico (2016) (S01E11)

inglês I was a bit disappointed. The previous episode set the bar high, so I was expecting more. Sure, there were some key revelations and interesting interactions, but the story’s pace slowed significantly, and I found myself a bit bored at times. It’s a shame, but I’m hopeful it’s just a calm before the storm in the season finale. ()

Embate explosivo (2016) (S01E12)

inglês Well, well, well! We're back to a five-star rating. The season finale was exceptionally well done. It had the right atmosphere, a plot full of events, and unlike the previous episode, the story maintained a good pace. This time, I was most entertained by the two main female characters. The financial maneuvering before the deposition and the preparations for a potential escape were genuinely amusing. ()

Season 2 (2017) (S02)

inglês Season 2 had practically the same effect on me as the previous season. Even the weaker episodes were worth at least four stars. I had a great time all along. I really appreciate that there are no truly positive characters in the series. It’s about constant elaborate intrigue and cynicism, which makes me excited for more. ()

Gerenciamento de risco (2017) (S02E01)

inglês The episode was clearly designed to remind viewers of the previous plot and set the stage for what's to come. It's your typical introductory episode, reintroducing the characters and the storyline. Honestly, it wasn't bad at all. ()

Voo da galinha (2017) (S02E02)

inglês Last episode set the stage, so I was ready for things to pick up. While the story was interesting and I wasn't bored, the pace felt a bit sluggish. I expected the second episode to be a bit more lively. Fingers crossed for the upcoming episodes. ()

Cenário ideal (2017) (S02E03)

inglês Third time's the charm — this episode worked for me. I love poker, whether I'm playing it live, in Far Cry, or watching it in movies or shows. The pre-game prep was amusing, and Taylor gave me strong Stranger Things "Thirteen" vibes, but with less charm. Brian and the flight attendant were a great touch too. ()

O juramento (2017) (S02E04)

inglês The fourth episode didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The story had potential, but the creators seemed to let it drift along at a slow pace, sacrificing momentum. The subplot with Wendy felt out of place, and honestly, I wouldn’t have missed it if it wasn’t there. ()

Uma questão de moeda (2017) (S02E05)

inglês Things picked up again. The plotting and scheming returned, bringing back the engaging atmosphere and pacing. Damian Lewis got another chance to show off his knack for playing cold-blooded characters. A welcome improvement after the previous episode. 5*- ()
