Those Who Said No

During the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Shiite fundamentalists came to power and thousands of their opponents ended up in prison and were secretly tortured or killed. The perpetrators, some of whom now occupy high government positions, were never prosecuted. In October 2012, a quarter of a century later, these crimes against humanity were examined at the Iran tribunal in The Hague. Over three days, survivors and relatives of the victims provided their testimony before the tribunal and the court ruled that the evidence must be submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which can issue binding judgments in relation to states.
