Nação Condenada (2017)

inglês I was expecting a great show, which is what I got. I have only a few minor quibbles, otherwise I’m really satisfied. I’m not crazy about American production, but I've grown fond of the prohibition and economic crisis theme because the movies and series set in this period aren’t usually full of melodrama, they don't glorify patriotism, and tend to have a good story. 4*+ ()

Sam Riley's Body (2017) (E01)

inglês The show's premise grabbed my attention right away. The first episode introduces us to a story set in rural America during the Great Depression and Prohibition. The creators did a great job crafting a retro atmosphere and a bunch of interesting characters. I would be even more satisfied if they hadn’t felt the need to include modern quotas. The only literate prostitute is, of course, a Black woman, and one of the toughest characters is, of course, a woman. I wouldn't mind this if the story wasn't set in 1931 — it feels a bit like sci-fi. ()

Which Side Are You On (2017) (E02)

inglês Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the series so far. The plot never got dull for a moment, and I learned about a branch of the Ku Klux Klan (the Black Legion) that I hadn’t heard of before. It was a solidly entertaining episode. ()

One Penny (2017) (E03)

inglês I have to admit, I'm really enjoying this series so far. A lot of that has to do with the excellent period atmosphere and some truly interesting characters. In this episode, I was completely won over by the hesitant sheriff, Don Berryman. I've liked Christopher Heyerdahl since his Hell on Wheels days, and he’s just as great here. ()

The Emperor of Ice Cream (2017) (E04)

inglês Oh no, not again. If it weren't for that incredibly overused phrase "We've been suffering for 300 years," I would rate the episode with five stars, but all these sufferers are really getting on my nerves. I definitely suffered a lot too, especially during the Protectorate era when the Gestapo was terrifying, and I still don't cry all the time. Otherwise, it was a very well-made episode that I simply couldn't get bored with. ()

Den of Lost Souls (2017) (E05)

inglês The episode stayed right on course. It still fell just short of a fifth star, but I was really satisfied. I absolutely loved the 1930s atmosphere. The inclusion of some forgotten Chicago gentlemen was a particularly entertaining touch. ()

In Wyoming Fashion (2017) (E06)

inglês This time, the creators leaned heavily on flashback scenes, which I actually appreciated. They helped fill in the gaps about events that had only been hinted at so far. Now that the show is in its second half, it was clearly time to start explaining things. ()

A Different Species (2017) (E07)

inglês I'd say this was the best episode of the series so far. It had the usual fantastic atmosphere, plus a hefty dose of action, suspense, human experimentation, and spy-detective scenes. I had a great time watching it, and even if I tried to be bored, I wouldn’t have found the opportunity. ()

The Goodness of Men (2018) (E08)

inglês Sure, this episode wasn’t as action-packed as the last one, but it was still incredibly entertaining and offered a valuable lesson: if you want to stop a lynching, don’t just hit someone with a stick when you have better options. Plus, I enjoyed learning about why there are farmers' markets. ()

Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground (2018) (E09)

inglês I'm enjoying this show more with each episode. It’s probably because the creators have doubled down on action, and they’ve done it really well, even if I have a few nitpicks. For instance, the explosion in the food shed was a great choice, but I was surprised the wooden structure held up. And to take out a truck with a machine gun, one grenade should have sufficed — no need for such overkill. But these are just minor issues. Overall, I had a great time watching. ()

God's Body (2018) (E10)

inglês It's a real shame that the creators clearly expected to shoot another season, leaving some plot points hanging and feeling a bit unfinished. But I can't really blame them; at least they showed that they believed in their work, unlike the big guys up top. ()
