Takakura era detetive da polícia de Tóquio, se aposentou por causa de um grave incidente que o deixou traumatizado, e agora é professor de psicologia criminal na universidade. Esperando que esta nova carreira o leve a uma vida mais tranquila, ele e sua esposa Yasuko se mudam para um tranquilo bairro no subúrbio. Seus vizinhos imediatos são os Nishino. Embora Takakura tenha se afastado completamente do trabalho policial, ele não pode conter sua curiosidade quando Nogami, seu ex-colega, pede um conselho sobre um caso sem solução: o estranho desaparecimento de uma família que aparentemente fugiu de casa e seus corpos nunca foram encontrados. Um dia, Takakura é abordado pela filha do vizinho, que lhe diz: "Aquele homem na minha casa não é meu pai... Ele é um completo estranho". (Zeta Filmes)

The return of Kurosawa to horror thrillers certainly lives up to its name. It’s very creepy in some places, especially during the first half, where the clash of the main character and his wife with their weird neighbour is only hinted at. Then it goes into full insanity, which, together with the fact that we are in Japan and the characters sometimes do questionably, almost senseless things, creates a pretty special experience. Actually, I’m not sure whether this film is actually interesting and originally unsettling and gripping, or stupidly put together. It could also have been shorter, but given that I went to it expecting to get bored sooner or later, which in the end didn’t happen, this is more a statement than a complaint. 7/10
