Dealing with life and death in South Korea. Mudang are female Shamans. They act as mediators between the world of the living and the world beyond; between the living and their ancestors. The kut is a ceremony, where the spirits of the ancestors take possession of the mudang, and are able to communicate with the living. Shamanism is the original religion in Korea. Today it has mixed with Confucianism and Buddhism, forming a fascinating new tradition. The mudang are called when somebody dies. But they also help in family conflicts between parents and children or husband and wife, or when the soul of a deceased cannot find peace. When the mudang question the ancestors, they include the living in the soul-searching process. The film accompanies different shamans to ceremonies. It is a trip to Korea and its traditions: on the countryside the mudang celebrate burials, in the cities they act as traditional eastern psychotherapists. (DOK.fest München)
