Ashura is a commemoration during Muharram (the first month in the Islamic calendar) which originally coincided with the beginning of a holy armistice. Peace also reigns at the beginning of this story. Somewhere in the Moroccan countryside, four children scare the living daylights out of each other, just for fun of course. In a house that is rumored to be the dwelling place of ghosts, one of them mysteriously disappears. A quarter-century later, the three remaining friends bump into their long-lost playmate. His reappearance coincides with a series of child kidnappings. Would he by any chance have something to do with that? (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival)

O primeiro filme de terror marroquino com um monstro. A história de um grupo de velhos amigos de infância que passaram por uma experiência traumática com um monstro desconhecido quando eram jovens, depois de algum tempo perderam a memória, e agora se propuseram a enfrentar novamente o monstro com o objetivo de evitar o desaparecimento misterioso de crianças na zona, seria bastante decente se não se assemelhasse tanto ao enredo de It de Stephen King. Imaginem o romance de King metido num filme de 90 minutos, sem toda a psicologia de personagens e a maior parte dos momentos assustadores (o filme é apenas ligeiramente assustador, e o monstro acima mencionado é também desagradavelmente digital às vezes), e resta uma narrativa com pontos fracos e um tronco da história às vezes um pouco confuso, com atores pouco convincentes e uma banda sonora mal escolhida ainda por cima. Os únicos pontos positivos são a escolha de locais, às vezes a câmara e, sobretudo, os motivos derivados da cultura marroquina e das tradições nacionais, que fazem com que o filme pareça pelo menos um pouco original.

This is an extremely heavy-handed Moroccan clone of King's novel "It", probably influenced by the commercial success of recent American movie adaptations. They borrow almost everything from King, even the structure of the narrative which runs on two parallel planes of existence, where we watch the characters as children being threatened by a surrealist monster, and then watch them reunited after 25 years, so that they may all work together to put a stop to it. Unlike the aforementioned book, however, the characters are too shallow, the plot is chaotic, there is an absence of logic and a completely insufficient explanation of the monster’s mythology. When ugly CGI, actors who are not believable, zero horror atmosphere and the fact it has no original ideas are all added to the mix, I actually have no idea why I should be interested in this movie. This is an unsatisfactory attempt at horror in every way. [Sitges 2019]
