Four elderly men in tutu appear on stage in a small auditorium. Thirty years after their retirement as professional dancers, they perform as the Amsterdam Trockadero Ballet, presenting a parody on the classic ballerina. Owing to their self-mockery, they avoid the audience’s scorn about their age. Director Coleta Valkenburg films the gentlemen on stage, during rehearsals and at a reunion of the Scapino Ballet, where they try to find new members for their company. There are not many candidates and the troupe threatens to dissolve – especially now that one of the dancers has to undergo surgery after a series of injuries. With a sad smile, he says, ‘Dancing is the only thing that I can do, really.’ The performance combines humour and tragedy – on stage, jokes are cracked, but in the dressing room, between acts, weary sighs can be heard.
