Kobe,1940. Na noite que antecede o início da II Guerra Mundial, o comerciante Yusaku Fukuhara sente que se avizinha um futuro perturbador. Deixa a mulher Satoko e viaja para a Manchúria, onde será testemunha de um acto bárbaro que pretende denunciar. Entretanto, Satoko é procurada por um polícia, amigo de infância, que lhe conta que uma mulher, que o marido trouxe da Manchúria, morreu. Satoko, dilacerada pelo ciúme, confronta o marido. Mas quando descobre as verdadeiras intenções de Yusaku, faz o impossível para garantir a sua segurança e felicidade. (Midas Filmes)

It might seem like it would be action-packed and extremely suspenseful, but it's not. That's not quite Kurosawa's style. This is pure drama full of pretense. Despite being set during WWII, with secret police wandering around and military secrets falling into the hands of ordinary people, it's an intimate film with perfect sets and costumes. Everything is tuned to a grim grey, ignorance combined with lofty goals. But if you take the period-ness out of it, it's a film about love and betrayal and the complexity of relationships, their transformation and permanence. And as such, I liked the film. Plus, Aoi Yū and Takahashi Issei were great.
