Sinopses(1)
The scene is a small town in the Hungarian Plain, the time is Summer 1945. The diggers who have been left out of land distribution are demonstrating in front of the City Hall. Upon the advice of an unemployed engineer having returned from captivity, an uncultivated and barren piece of land is distributed among them. The diggers unite to produce rice on the land together. They ask for Bordács's advice, who helps them a lot. Bordács is more and more alienated from his friend, Oltványi, now the leader of a bourgeois party, and forms a closer friendship with the Communist Pattonai. He is very much attracted to Aranka, the daughter of one of the diggers, but he still marries Lulu, the daughter of a gentleman. The diggers wish to sell the rice unharvested, and Bordács begs them to wait until the harvest, in vain. Bordács tries to stop the auction, but the enraged diggers beat him to death. Aranka arrives too late. (texto oficial do distribuidor)
