Tarot: Carta da Morte (2024)

inglês The most mediocre and classic mainstream horror genre film that can possibly be made for the least discerning audience (teenage girls). On the one hand, I appreciate that the whole movie isn't just haunted by one boogeyman, but every single protagonist has their own demon and they surprisingly have great make-up effects, so all those scenes are relatively fine. It's a shame that there's no gore, because if if the film had been conceived of it as a fun bloody killing spree it would have been better; this way they rely on ineffective scares and a not very effective atmosphere. Too bad. Visually it's fine, but the story is the most basic and you don’t get to form any relationship with the characters. Pure 50%

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)

inglês If you like this series, if you liked the third part, you should be satisfied here too. It's not a significant shift in quality, it's just a standard solid action comedy, where the mutual banter between Martin Lawrence and Will Smith works, but above all it's pulled by well-done action, which at times takes your breath away. Adil el Arbi and Bilall Fallah know their job. There are nice Miami visuals, a decent bad guy played by Eric Dane (Euphoria), decently brutal R-rated action with engaging camera forays, top visuals, some twist and turns and working one-liners. The whole film paces well with no deaf spots and it's exactly the right action entertainment that's missing in cinemas and you can take anyone to see it. If you expect a film with a well thought out plot, you won't be satisfied here, but if you know what to expect from a film, you can't be disappointed. 8/10.

Sous la Seine (2024)

inglês Oh so this is not going to rank with this year's New French Wave and there was a lot of faith in Xavier Gens, who could have saved the eco shark horror after a long time, but who hasn't come up with a quality genre film in years, and instead of a proper shark carnage, he made a sort of activist eco drama? WTF! I don't care that it's stupid and nothing makes sense, but the fact that the shark only appears properly after an hour and the whole time it's just bullshit activism, Gens shat his bed here. For an hour absolutely nothing happens, I don't understand the focus on the story, which nobody cares about anyway, the characters are completely useless, the whole thing takes itself too seriously, so it's unfortunately an incredible bore, which could have been saved by lightness and gore, but even that is lacking. The final 20 minutes didn't offend me, finally something starts to happen and finally the shark shows up, which is digital, but it's honestly the least of the problems here. Next time please another Frontier(s) instead of not these experiments. A big disappointment, but for the finale and the inoffensive underwater shots, at least two stars. 3/10.

Kolory zła: Czerwień (2024)

inglês A bit of a disappointment for me, but that's due to the film's premise, which lured in a serial killer who cuts off women's lips, and I was expecting a gritty Hannibal-style murder mystery, and it really didn't. The murders are at most just talked about. I was expecting it gritty, unpleasant, raw and brutal and I found it very light even for the Poles. I didn't care for the final twist. I didn't enjoy it much, didn't like the style the film was going in and it has few attractive scenes. 55%

What You Wish For (2023)

inglês A psychological, dense, disturbing conversational Thriller that came out of nowhere and is one of the nice surprises much like Last Stop in Yuma County. Unfortunately, I can't say too much about the film, as there's an interesting twist at the 20 minute mark that piles on more twists and turns, and it's a pleasure to see it turn into one of my favorite "horror" themes. I'll give a minor hint though, and it's a bit of a variation on the recent hit The Menu. The film mainly benefits from a mysterious and disturbing atmosphere, a decent script and an interesting location. The clever detective was excellent! It's a shame it doesn't escalate more at the end, as it was slightly encouraged to do so (if it had turned into a slasher, I might have considered the maximum rating). Of course, it's also a bit of a socially relevant satire. Don't find out anything and don't hesitate, it's good !!! 75%

Une affaire d'honneur (2023)

inglês This French historical drama is worth a watch. The men settle their honour by duelling each other with swords or pistols, and the acting is dominated by fencing master Roschdy Zem, who plays a very likeable character. It's got attractive visuals, strong themes like honour, pride and feminism, interesting dueling rules and nicely filmed and intense duels (the fencing is really cool!), and the emotions at the end may work on some people. A decent film on an unconventional subject where thousands of Frenchmen died in tough duels.. 7/10.

Contra Todos (2023)

inglês A bit of a disappointment for me, only the awesome finale pulls it up to a higher rating, but otherwise a bit of a letdown. The light-hearted concept bothered me a bit, unfortunately it isn't very funny and most of the actors overact disgustingly theatrically (Andrew Koji downright pissed me off here and doesn't perform anything). I was also quite bothered by Bill Skarsgård's inner voice and the humour was surprisingly lacking, but the action scenes were good, there’s a decent portion of gore, where heads and limbs are not spared. But then comes the finale, where the final 2 in 1 fight is the new ceiling of the action genre!! It was a like out of The Raid 2, with top choreography, nice slow-motion shots, fatalities; it made me scream and sweat like few have done before, this scene will definitively be in the TOP 10 fights on YouTube. 70%

Club Zero (2023)

inglês A decent, manipulative European oddity on an interesting subject, where Mia Wasikowska (she looks terrible!) shows students new dietary trends, which soon leads to kids stopping eating and parents being sick of it. Too bad it doesn't go into further extremes and there's probably only one properly unpleasant scene. The finale is quite unexpected, but I could imagine it being more shocking. Not Bad. 6/10.

Furiosa: Uma Saga Mad Max (2024)

inglês George Miller is a god and serves up another excellent post-apocalyptic blast. If Fury Road was a 10, this is a very solid 9! Another great visually lavish cinematic experience, of which there won't be many this year, so don't hesitate any longer and head on over! It tells the revenge story of a young Furiosa in an attractive post-apocalyptic world. All the factions and how they work is very fun and interesting (I liked the costumes and the visuals of all the characters, they were properly insane). It's got an intense and adrenaline-packed pace, and even though the first big action scene comes somewhere before the halfway point, it's decently suspenseful and engaging until then, there's simply no danger of boredom. Anya Taylor Joy is excellent as always, and here she doesn’t even have to speak properly, her look was enough to express all the emotions perfectly. Thor a.k.a. Dementus gives the best performance of his career, he really enjoys the madman perfectly. Visually it's again very intense, the music is beautifully ear-splitting, the action scenes surprise with more and more crazy ideas, and you enjoy every shot and moment. There’s even one delightful small cameo, and the ending with the living tree was awesome! Furiosa with Dune 2 and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is clearly the king of this year's blockbusters. There are plenty of epic moments that will make me very happy to watch Furiosa again. 9/10.

Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor (2023)

inglês Atmospheric found footage inferno!!! I didn't think I'd ever be scared to go to the toilet after watching a horror movie, but here I was, like, super uncomfortable. I don't mind ghosts or demons, I don't mind heads and dicks being cut and guts flying around, but I downright hate mannequins and clowns and this combo is deadly to me. Also adding a lot to the atmosphere was the fact that I watched this film at 3am and when you are going back to your hotel at night it can sometimes be scary, I almost took out my torch and the walk up to the second floor was almost reminiscent of Silent Hill! Already in the first story you could sense that the filmmakers have talent despite the limited budget, but I was bothered by the chaotic camera and the distracting images, it was still kind of The Blair Witch Project style with an epileptic touch, where you can't see much and the camera shakes like pensioners in front of a supermarket at 7am, but here all these flaws are absent. The cinematography is beautifully polished, and visually it's immediately a more attractive film, and to me, more likeable. Plus the film has the potential to be an interesting crime mystery, based around the wealthy Carmichael family of the huge mansion I have a soft spot for. So here we have a group of three investigators who decide to spend five nights in this mansion, as they suspect it is haunted, and it is! From about 40 minutes onwards, it goes into full horror mode with the scariest clowns I've ever seen, and every shot of them gave me chills and uncomfortable anxiety. The camera work is downright masterful and I can say the same for the sound design, where some of the scares tingled with me properly, as they should. The atmosphere is bleak and very much evil, the pacing by the end is so intense that I wished it was already over, because I was afraid that I might not be able to physically handle any more revelations! I also praise the very innovative haunted attractions (for example the scene where we only watch a sequence of photos that start to get progressively more creepy was brilliant), here even James Wan would give a standing ovation! A found footage gem with proper creepy vibes. I'm bumping it up to full score because I haven't had a more intense horror experience since The Conjuring and The Host. An underrated masterpiece that is downright hell to watch. 9/10.
