Samba (2014)

inglês The first major disappointment from the duo of Omar Sy and Eric Toledano (The Intouchables). While the film nicely depicts the fact that immigrants have it tough in France and Omar Sy can be as good as he wants, no one has mercy without papers. There is very little humour, but there is no boredom. If you're in the mood for a topical social drama that's well acted and filmed, it's fine to watch. 65%.

O Deus da Carnificina (2011)

inglês A decent short conversational film with excellent actors and a stifling atmosphere that will make couples laugh. It could have been funnier, but it didn't offend. Christoph Waltz excels again. 65%.

24 Horas Para Viver (2017)

inglês This was really good. Ethan Hawke has one of the most interesting roles of his career, and I wouldn't have thought he'd fit into an action movie role so nicely. The film has an original plot, very good pacing, R-rated action, though there aren’t any big fights, the shootouts are perfect, suspenseful, well shot and there are plenty of them. For me, great adrenaline fun. Similar B-movies could come out more often. 80%.

Stranger Things - Season 2 (2017) (temporadas)

inglês It's rare that a second season has the exact same ratings as the first, and at 91%, that's saying a hell of a lot. It's good to see all the likeable child characters together again, and this time around, young redhead Max rounds out the bunch and undoubtedly deserves a spot here. The new characters (the new girl who has supernatural powers, Max's brother who was a real asshole, and Bob's new friend Joyce) are definitely nice, but what I wasn't too happy about Eleven, who is sidelined for more than half of the season, and that's a mistake, as she is the driving force of the show, but the last two episodes thankfully make up for it. The series is more action and horror this time around, the Lovecraftian shadow monsters, little "lizards" and a lot of Will's outbursts are mysterious. Once again the series runs like water, there are scenes that give you goosebumps and the retro atmosphere is again impeccable. I enjoyed the adventure with the kids again, but it didn't hit me emotionally like it did a year ago. 85%

Présumé coupable (2011)

inglês An incredibly powerful film where France confirms once again its immense cinematic qualities. I love courtroom dramas and here the atmosphere was very suffocating and disturbing. The main character is wrongly convicted of a very unpleasant crime (child sexual abuse) and receives heavy psychological pressure from every side. The ending makes you roll your hands in fists and feel like committing something nefarious. Very good 85%

Fighter (2007)

inglês A decent film about a Muslim girl who wants to train kung fu, but has a hard time in life. The final fight is decently filmed thanks to impressive slow motion and we get a nice feel for the moves. Otherwise, it’s more of a sports drama that I didn't find all that exceptional from other similarly themed films. 65%.

Resurrección (2015)

inglês I didn't like it very much. Too long, slow, not attractive enough and not engaging enough for me. There are some interesting atmospheric passages, but they didn't tell me anything in the end. These historical talky horror movies with religious themes where nothing happens properly don't say anything to me. 50%

L'Emmerdeur (2008)

inglês Another superb French comedy from the director of Shut Up!, a gem of cinema. It's a mystery to me why this film isn't as popular, as the premise is very similar to Shut Up! One hotel, a connected room, and in it an assassin and a chatty suicidal man – this duo pulled the whole film together. Lots of funny and comical situations, and decently suspenseful at times. Good film. 80%.

Penso como um Homem (2012)

inglês A very enjoyable comedy with a great theme. Women start using the advice of a popular book to uncover men's secrets and start exploiting it with their partners. Occasionally funny until I cried (Kevin Hart is great again), and although the cast is predominantly darker skinned it doesn't hurt the film at all on the contrary (all of the women are alluring and attractive). The first hour is 5*, the second hour, where the guys retaliate, is slightly less funny. Still a great comedy. 80%

Falsas Aparências (2000)

inglês I caught up with this older piece and it wasn't bad. It’s a bit of a wacky idea with a wonderful Bruce Willis, at a time when he could still act and was one of the top. I was surprised by the presence of beautiful women and the prettiest one even shows up naked, for which I'll even throw in that extra star. 70%.
