Malarkey

It’s true that I probably saw the first Super Troopers movie back at school. It’s been a very long time, so I hoped that I’d have just as much fun as I did then. And I wasn’t disappointed. The guys go really wild, taking a few jabs at Canada in the process, which doesn’t hurt. As far as I know, the only American production able to do that was South Park, which was also fun. A classic teenage humor that it’s so stupid that it manages to be funny. I don’t want to give it bad rating, because I laughed really hard a few times.

A solid German drama about a handicapped brother, which milks your emotions from the beginning to the end. The premise is nothing new, but if you grow fond of the two brothers and keep hoping for a happy ending the entire time, you’re going to have a great time watching this. An exemplary European drama with exactly the kind of emotions a quality film should arouse, including wonderful acting performances naturally led by David Kross, who relished his role of the handicapped guy and delivered a really convincing performance. The Germans really deserve praise for this film. It’s been a while since I saw such a realistic drama that made me feel like I was living through it.

Normally it’d be just another of these bland French comedies. But because the film features the incredibly likeable Bérengère Krief, her performance won me over and the film became a very positive and pleasant viewing experience.

Steven Soderbergh used the face of Claire Foy, who has finally returned to acting in recent years, in an artsy film treating a classic schizophrenic premise. And it wasn’t that bad.

As far as similar horrors go, it was quite a crazy ride, which got the maximum out of similar teambuilding events and managed to entertain in the process.

As the first movie was a nice chillout before going to bed, I thought to myself that the second one wouldn’t be much worse. And it wasn’t. It was nothing that would offend anyone. A bit of a techno-thriller, the type that Tony Scott used to make years ago, and now Antoine Fuqua picked up the baton.

I usually award similar life stories with the full amount of stars, but in this case I wasn’t very happy about the ending, which was too pathetic for my tastes. But the story and the environment definitely deserve the audience’s attention. The creators shot a movie about a grandma who sacrificed her whole life to her husband, and after his death decided to climb one of the most demanding peaks of the Scottish Highlands. Alright, maybe ‘peak’ is a bit of an exaggeration, as Silven is only 700 m high. But it’s still a steep hill rather far north, so the climate there is quite harsh, with a lot of strong wind. We must also take into account that it’s located quite far from the nearest road. I liked the premise, the camera and the Scottish mountain locations. The film had its charm. The grandma was rather annoying in the beginning, but turned into a champ who managed the impossible. Such life stories deserve respect.

After seeing this film I must say that even here in Czech Republic, we are able to make theatre-like, intimate films relying on two characters and the wonderfully written dialogues between them. Thanks! I was really enjoying this!

So you get a few drinks and you consider yourself an alcoholic. But that’s only because you didn’t see what the guys from alcohol rehab in this film are capable of. Compared to them, you’ll feel like you don’t have any problem at all. I bow down before the creators. I think that this topic couldn’t have been conveyed better, especially as far as character psychology is concerned. Everyone delivers breathtaking acting performances. The saddest parts are probably those played by Ondřej Malý and Jaroslav Dušek. On the other hand, these are the characters that will make you think about them the most. I must admit that I wasn’t familiar with Mr. Formánek’s story before seeing this, but now he has my respect that he made it and got clean. And the creators deserve me taking my imaginary hat off, because they managed to make an exemplary European drama with a universal message.

The atmosphere of the period was such that the guys who lived there told me that the life under the communist regime was shit but when you rebelled against it a little, it was not so bad. I liked it. The documentary is about skateboarding as well as about the period.
