Rastejantes (2019)

inglês A suspenseful horror film about two heroes who find themselves trapped in a basement with hungry alligators during a hurricane. Clever and interesting characters, well built tension and some pretty gritty scenes make Crawl a very fine genre entertainment. Too bad it turns from horror to action B-movie at the end.

Uma Família no Ringue (2019)

inglês A young Englishwoman gets a chance to fight her way into the prestigious wrestling organization WWE. She knows she'll have to work very hard for it, but she doesn't count on how much this chance will affect the lives of those closest to her. Stephen Merchant delivers a brisk feel-good biopic from an unusual setting with fun characters and an incredibly fine Florence Pugh in the lead role. You should see Fighting with My Family for her alone. But even the rest is well above average.

Operação Overlord (2018)

inglês It sounded more promising on paper. Overlord is a well made action horror film with undead, Nazis and undead Nazis. It's just that they didn't have a lot of money to spend on it, so it takes a long time to get going, and in the end Julius Avery and J.J. Abrams don't show enough to make it a real hit. But thanks to the good cast, the proper cinematic violence, and solid pacing towards the end, it's ultimately pretty good, though I guess more was expected.

MIB: Homens de Negro - Força Internacional (2019)

inglês Young agent M and British veteran H must join forces to stop a threat that wants to destroy the entire planet. And so they travel between London, New York, Africa and Paris. And it’s boring. The new Men in Black lacks wit, ideas, a clever story and interesting protagonists. And they have nothing to offer either fans of the franchise or casual fans of great sci-fi comedies. A useless film.

X-Men: Fénix Negra (2019)

inglês Jean Grey has become the Dark Phoenix, and the other X-Men can't tame her the easy way. But do they stand a chance against their former partners? And what if someone far more dangerous is after her new powers? The new X-Men return to their roots and try to rely on interesting characters and character development more than action. It succeeds only halfway. Unfortunately, Simon Kinberg's surprisingly solid direction is tripped up by the often not-so-good actors and an overly rushed story. There are some strong emotional moments, though, and the finale on the train is among the best action we've ever seen in X-Men. I was expecting a lot worse.

Godzilla II: Rei dos Monstros (2019)

inglês Wow, I didn't enjoy it. Like, so very, very, very much. The other Godzilla shows that it cost a lot of money, and the monster battles are actually pretty good, at least the final one, which cleverly works with scale and alternates spectacular shots of two dueling titans with action with human characters running at their feet. But that's pretty much it. The new Godzilla has about fifteen human characters, but finding a single one among them that was the least bit interesting or likeable was a task beyond me. A few hours after the screening, I actually remember the names of about two of the protagonists. The trouble is that despite all the declamation and certain attempts to conceive Godzilla II a little differently, it is ultimately very much about those human characters, who of course are the ones who, by their dullness, flatness and absolute unwillingness to take themselves even a little bit less seriously (this is a film in which a giant lizard fights an even bigger three-headed dragon, dammit!) they get boring at first, and then just annoying. The grandeur and elegance promised by the trailers isn't there in the end, and while the fights are fun to watch, the rest of it really doesn't work. In fact, as a viewer, I'm not really interested in seeing another film conceived in this way.

Rocketman (2019)

inglês A musical biopic or a musical? Rocketman wants to be both, and tries to present Elton John's life story as a film that deals with his addictions and traumas, but also has people dancing in the middle of the street. It's nice to look at, but it doesn't quite fit together and the really dramatic scenes in particular don't work very well because there simply isn't enough time for the film to properly sell them. But it looks very nice and sounds even better. It just skims the surface and wants to entertain above all else. Of course, I won't say it's bad, but I would have liked a bit more.

cartaz

Alladin (2019)

inglês The thief Aladdin would like to seduce the princess, but ends up in the hands of the villain Jafar, who wants to use him to bring him a magic lamp. But Aladdin discovers a Genie living in the lamp who grants him three wishes, and he decides to pursue the princess with his help. But Jafar doesn't give up... Guy Ritchie directs a brisk and visually arresting family fairy tale that brilliantly combines humour, suspense and romance and features a very likeable cast. The problem is that it's too similar to the animated original and doesn't bring much new to the story. How much of a problem that is is for everyone to figure out. But the craftsmanship is more than good.

Extremamente Perverso, Escandalosamente Cruel e Vil (2019)

inglês He's young, charming, educated, handsome, and he also kills women sometimes. Ted Bundy was one of America's most terrifying serial killers, but what he was doing was long refused to be believed by those closest to him and much of the American public. And Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile shows that this is actually quite understandable... Zac Efron gives a very good performance and Joe Berlinger is quite clever at playing with the audience. Unfortunately, the film runs out of ideas somewhere in the middle and starts to become unnecessarily transparent and frankly a bit untrustworthy. Which is quite a pity.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019)

inglês Tim arrives in a town where humans and Pokémon live side by side. He wants to find out what happened to his father, and he gets an unexpected partner, Pikachu, who can talk. Only Tim can understand him, but that's useful. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is grand family entertainment, full of Pokémon, but their cuteness can't hide the fact that the film has a rather hackneyed story and not very interesting human characters. Fans of Pokémon will be happy, because there are a lot of them running around on the screen. The rest, however, will be treated to mediocre entertainment at best, with a fine Ryan Reynolds.
