Lirio Ferreira co-directed, with Paulo Caldas, the feature film Baile Perfumado (1996), which was awarded best film at the Festival of Brasília. Árido Movie (2005), his second feature film, screened at several festivals including Venice, Rio, Miami, Karlovy Vary, Paris, New York, and CINE PE, where it won six awards, including best picture and director. In 2007, he launched the biopic Cartola, co-directed by Hilton Lacerda, on the homonymous Rio samba legend, which became the highest grossing documentary of the year in Brazil. The Man Who Bottled Clouds (2009) had its international premiere at the NY MoMA, was selected for the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, and won the award for Best Documentary of the Year by the Brazilian Film Academy.
