Emir Kusturica

A famous graduate of Prague's FAMU film school, Emir Kusturica is one of Europe's most successful and original directors. His films have won him many awards at prestigious festivals. As well as directing he has also enjoyed success as an actor and musician.

His pictures have a distinctive style that brings together the Balkans temperament, magical realism and powerful emotions. At the same time, controversial themes have made his work the frequent target of criticism. This also goes for the highly-regarded Underground, in which Kusturica comes to terms with the post-war history of Yugoslavia. His most recent film On the Milky Road was in competition for a Golden Lion in Venice.
