Noriko (Setsuko Hara) está perfeitamente feliz a viver em casa com o seu pai viúvo, Shukichi (Chishû Ryû), e não tem planos para casar – ou melhor, não tem até a sua tia Masa (Haruko Sugimura) convencer Shukichi que, a não ser que ele case a sua filha de 27 anos em breve, há uma enorme probabilidade de esta permanecer sozinha para o resto da sua vida. This is a film that will caress your soul with its beauty but will also strike you dramatically with its human gravity. The beauty of this film's emotions is the non-violence with which they are delivered.
