Originally a 1965 Jimmy Stewart vehicle, this FLIGHT gets a rough and ready updating for the new century, with the stalwart Dennis Quaid now inhabiting the title role. He's a pilot on a routine trip out to investigate some remote oil rigs in the Gobi Desert, but things go wrong and he makes a crash landing in the middle of nowhere. For him, and the men along for the ride, a slow, tortured, thirsty death seems certain, unless the plucky mechanic in the crew (Giovanni Ribisi) can design a whole new plane from the wreckage. As with the original, this is a manly adventure of rugged survival and mechanical ingenuity, only this time there's a woman on board, Kelly (Miranda Otto) who generates some romantic sparks. Some of the other survivors are played by: Tyrese Gibson, Sticky Fingaz, Bob Brown and Kirk Jones. The men and one woman have to tangle with murderous desert raiders and numerous sandstorms in addition to the frequent squabbling amongst themselves. (texto oficial do distribuidor)

A cena da visita noturna aos contrabandistas chineses, sublinhada pelo «Champ» de Massive Attack, é excelente. Mas o resto do filme não tem nada a impressionar. Em filmes com uma dúzia de personagens, o elenco e a energia de personagens são os mais importantes. Mas os heróis desta obra do deserto são fracos, têm menos simpatia do que água para beber, e as nuances da relação entre eles correspondem às capacidades do realizador responsável pelo tedioso tiroteio Atrás das Linhas do Inimigo. Além disso, John Moore também não hesitaria em inserir sequências de video-clipes com efeito num drama do Holocausto. Portanto, continua a ser um mistério para mim como é que ele poderia ter sido escolhido para realizar um remake de um clássico dramático dos anos 60. Em vez de um drama credível, ele não serve senão um ridículo patético. É melhor ver Alive de Frank Marshall, em vez disso.

A great adventure drama with very good acting performances. Dennis Quaid can still play a tough guy, Giovanni Ribisi a crazy fool, and Hugh Laurie plays as if in preparation for House. The most impressive scene was definitely the nighttime shootout with Chinese smugglers, underscored by Massive Attack.

The first five minutes, with excellent camera work, are just an introduction, getting to know the main characters, and so on. Then comes the most important part, the collision, which is captivatingly filmed, typical of John Moore's action-style of directing, with quick cuts, dynamic shots, fast and sharply contoured camera moving from side to side. But that's all the film offers. It is technically competent, decent in terms of its premise, but poorly handled in terms of the screenplay and acting.
