After the CEO croaks during a boardroom meeting at a Madison Avenue ad agency, members trying to sabotage each other's chance of winning the top spot each vote for the token black guy, thereby electing Putney Swope. Swope swoops into action, firing them all and replacing them with armed radicals, soul brothers, and sexy red-hot mamas. Re-naming the agency "Truth and Soul," Putney sets about revolutionizing the corporate world of advertising, banning the marketing of products such as cigarettes, alcohol and violent toys. The agency produces raucous, kooky TV spots - offensive, humorous, and, at first, wildly successful. But can "Truth and Soul" last, not only in advertising but within Putney himself? No primeiro terço fiquei absolutamente entusiasmado com a cadência rápida de gags absurdas, de desatar às gargalhadas. O segundo terço traz um monte de humor impróprio que se alterna com momentos em que já emperra ao poucos. No último terço, tudo se desmorona sob o peso da anarquia total do argumentista e termina de algum jeito em algum lugar / em lugar nenhum. Putney Swope é um filme durante o qual me ri tanto quanto em pouquíssimas outras dos últimos meses, mas ainda senti que não funciona muito bem como um filme completo e apenas põe uma camada de skeches atrás da outra. De qualquer forma, nada contra, foi uma diversão razoável e vou voltar a ela com todo o gosto quando estiver com outra disposição. [KVIFF 2021]
