János is a shepherd and is doing his job, while Iluska is washing clothes in a streamlet. Iluska's stepmother intrudes upon what appears to be an idyllic scene of rustic love. János gives the old hag a hard time. She takes revenge on János by having his animals driven away to a prohibited area, and, by now jobless, the young lad soon finds himself in a hussar's uniform. The bravery of Hungarian hussars drives the Turks out of Burkus Land. János is knighted by the king, who would be happy to see his daughter married to János, but he, now a real hero, cannot get his mind off Iluska, his sweetheart. Enter Bagó, a fellow-hussar, breaking the news that Iluska is dead. He and János are on their way to bring her back to the world of living humans. Their mission is a success. János and his sweetheart settle down in the village. Bagó bids them fond farewell. (texto oficial do distribuidor)
