Unknown hands are busy pulling at the emergency brake, causing the train to miss the transfer. The man to blame for the act is Teddy, a man of the world and a born cynic, whose favourite hat has been blown off by the wind, which he feels he has to avenge himself for in such a way. The passengers are trapped for the night at the station in this God-forsaken place. They are intruded on by a group of gun-runners. They recount stories of a train of ghosts which, they say, is expected shortly to zoom past the station as has been the tradition since a train accident took place twenty years ago. Teddy, who has the air of an idler, is in fact a man of action, an agent of the secret service in disguise. Having identified the bandits and their true motives, he opens up the train bridge with the help of Mary, one of his fellow passengers, causing the train carrying the bandits to end up in the cleft.
