A divine musician and drifter by nature has some music to record but he lacks sufficient motivation. He'd rather wander aimlessly around the mythic city of Memphis absorbed in dreams, as if just a few steps from entering another dimension. He sees the town as a godforsaken spot shaded by a lush canopy of oaks, whose delapidated buildings are only good for a pack of kids. In the spirit of myth-imbued southern spirituality, we are presented with a modern version of a folktale inspired by a Memphis legend about blessed and cursed singer O. V. Wright, who fell from grace and was buried in an unmarked grave. In this deliriously compelling visual interpretation, the fragmented and surreal journey details the search for the soul of a musician played by Willis Earl Beal, enigmatic singer-songwriter of raw ballads. "This was an incredibly difficult performance for Willis because it is him, but it absolutely is not him, but it is him," director Tim Sutton remarked with a touch of mystery. (49th KVIFF) If I’d stayed for the debate and had the cojones, I would have told the actor’s delegate that people didn’t leave the theatre because it was a “demanding, but lyrically beautiful film that rewards an attentive and focused viewer”, but because it’s an insufferable, boring piece of shit about nothing. The first, and I hope the last, film that has pissed me off in the festival. One start for the joke about shagging with clay. Amen.

Um filme independente, refletindo a alma do ator principal, a existência humana, a fé em Deus e a atmosfera adormecida de Memphis. Não há muitas canções, não há muita coisa a acontecer, o ritmo faz dormir/é hipnótico, a câmara não é inventiva, e a única coisa que se aprecia realmente são os autênticos não atores, que são muito fixes às vezes (especialmente na forma como se expressam). As melhores são provavelmente as duas ou três histórias com ideias filosóficas que se ouvem no filme, incluindo, entre outros, o tema de «vim-me à terra» e «encontrei uma faca presa no meu peito» (o que não é hipérbole, na verdade, há uma mensagem muito profunda nestas histórias, e são engraçadas ainda por cima). Infelizmente, o mesmo não se pode dizer do resto do filme. Ainda bem que tem apenas 80 minutos de duração.
