A Ilha do Milharal

Um relaxamento imaginário «back-to-basics», tematicamente um pouco próximo de A Barreira Invisível de Mallick. Uma zona de guerra, uma pequena ilha num lago, e nela um avô com cara enrugada de vida e uma neta adolescente inocente. Construir um barracão de madeira, plantar milho, apanhar peixe. Música mínima e quase nenhum diálogo. Apenas a tempestade ocasional, um barco com soldados a passar, ou alguns tiros na floresta próxima perturbam de forma contrastante a poesia calmante do filme. De forma inventiva de grande angular, apesar do cenário espacialmente pequeno, nunca foi atingido de forma aborrecida. Há muito tempo que não me entretenho tanto com um filme com tão pouco a acontecer. Parabéns. (11/07/2014)

Um filme extraordinário, uma metáfora inteligente do ciclo de vida e, ainda por cima, uma história encantadora (talvez um pouco prolongada demais). Os dois protagonistas são perfeitamente escolhidos, e eu teria ficado muito tempo a observá-los, mesmo que estivessem apenas numa fotografia. Num espaço realmente mínimo, George Ovashvili interpreta uma quantidade incrível, embora a história que conta seja essencialmente minimalista (mas é a coisa mais importante do mundo para os heróis do filme). A câmara magnífica e a impressionante (quase alucinante), direção que sabe lidar com o ritmo, e toda a ideia sobre a qual foi construída fazem de A Ilha do Milharal um dos favoritos para o prémio principal do Festival Internacional de Cinema de Karlovy Vary (2014) para mim. A folklore ballad about fighting the elements, coexistence with nature and the awakening of a girl's body. Conservative directing style, supple lyrical shooting, typologically selected main roles and impressive design. The only thing to complain about is the instructional music and a certain form of leatherness, which certainly goes hand in hand with the genre, but at the same time can be grasped much more elegantly (e.g., the similarly tuned film Bal by Semi Kaplanoglu). I am not at all surprised that this movie won the Crystal Globe in Karlovy Vary. There actually isn’t much talking, but story-wise, there is so much happening. Exemplary is the choice of the location for the “corn island”, where all of the 100 minutes take place. I haven’t come across such beautiful camerawork in a long time. I really wasn’t indifferent towards the island despite it being an insignificant land, which suddenly appeared in the middle of a river on the border of two states, which some people wouldn’t even consider to be states, let alone with a border. Great poetics, unique experience. It was a pity, though, that I had to guess a lot of things. It took me a while to understand what was going on in the old man’s head and before I understood why he did all of it. But cinematically it was flawless. (11/07/2017)
