Várnay András falls in love with Katica, the inhabitant of the house nearby, property of the Benedek family. András send his grandfather to propose to the girl on behalf of his grandson. Várnay, a pompous old man - who, in his young years, destroyed the peace of the Benedek family when he tried to have an affair with a married woman, later to become Katica'a grandmother, who was, as a result, expelled from the family's home by her husband - thinks that the girl is unworthy of András, therefore he only asks her to become his grandson's mistress. The girl, deeply offended, is off to Pest, where she gets married. Her marriage is a failure, her husband, a bank clerk being very much into gambling, playing cards. He is involved in a case of embezzlement. His parents have a grocer's business. He ends up taking away their money, too. Katica wants to sell her house to András. He helps her solve her financial problems. In the meantime, misunderstandings are explained. The young man takes his old man, once a debauchee, now a human wreck in a wheelchair, to Katica's place to propose to her, now a widow. (texto oficial do distribuidor)
