Sóváry, though talented, is at the moment an impecunious painter, unable to pay even for his hotel room. Through different petty machinations and tricks, he pretends, with a little help from his friends, to keep up appearances and look solvent. Elena, an artist of Hungarian origin and her waiting maid arrive at the hotel. Both Sóváry and Elena are unaware of having become next-door neighbours. There are also arguments between the two of them. Finally, they develop quite a liking for each other, but Sóváry continues to keep a low-profile vis-a-vis his financial position. When one of Sóváry's pictures is, eventually, awarded a 5000 pengoe prize by the authorities of the Town of Pest, their relationship becomes one of equal individuals. (texto oficial do distribuidor)
