It’s so clear that this is a black&white pose to be fawned over by the art and festival audiences, who will also find something that actually isn’t there. But as long as poses like this last only seventy minutes, I’m fine with them. A decent atmosphere and a surprising plot twist.

The Forest of the Lost Souls is a Portuguese co-production that shows that it is possible to make a horror movie that clearly has ambitions to be an arthouse movie or at least a thriller. It unravels slowly in black and white, and while it is not going to suit everyone, it is a very specific example of what an alternative horror movie could be.
