Maria (Marlene Dietrich) is married to Sir Frederick Barker (Herbert Marshall), a British diplomat who spends a lot of time travelling and pays little attention to his partner. Maria is starting to feel neglected by her husband and while she is visiting a friend in Paris, she meets Anthony Halton (Melvyn Douglas), an American tourist. The pair develop a mutual attraction but Maria decides not to act on her feelings for the sake of her marriage. Shortly after her return to England, Maria and Frederick attend the races and she spots Anthony in the crowd.
