Buenos Aires, 1971. Carlitos is a seventeen-year-old youth. As a young boy, he coveted other people’s things, but it wasn’t until his early adolescence that his true calling - to be a thief - manifested itself. When he meets Ramon at his new school, Carlitos is immediately drawn to him. Together they will embark on a journey of discoveries, love and crime. Killing is just a random offshoot of the violence, which continues to escalate until Carlitos is finally apprehended. Because of his angelic appearance, the press dubs Carlitos "The Angel of Death." Altogether, he is believed to have committed over forty thefts and eleven homicides. Um retrato visualmente belo e narrativamente vivo (música retro bonita) dum adolescente sem carácter, com um rosto angelical e as suas práticas criminosas. O filme é divertido, não faz um grande problema com os roubos ou assassinatos, leva tudo com o desprendimento ignorante do personagem principal. Na verdade, é uma espécie de espetáculo sem limites para ambos. Lorenzo Ferro no papel principal adequa-se à aparência e é propriamente fleumático, mas é apenas um puto que não sabe o que faz, é mais sortudo do que esperto, e por isso não merece nenhum respeito ou não é de forma nenhuma fixe. É por isso que este filme também não é nada ao estilo de Scorsese. [Sitges FF]

El Angel is the story of a young guy with an angelic face for whom other people’s property, money, feelings and later on even lives meant nothing. So he took them to his heart’s content. And, in ’70s Argentina, he got away with it for quite a while. The casting is on point, the direction is stylish – even if at times, it blatantly imitates early Scorsese – and the appropriate black humour works. El Angel offers us a confidently filmed biographical flick which is entertaining and has a pleasant vintage atmosphere (especially thanks to a well-chosen soundtrack). In the end, all my expectations about this film have been fulfilled. [Sitges 2018]

A solid Spanish gangster film! Based on true events, the story revolves around a 17 year old teenager with an angelic face and hair who is responsible for over forty robberies and eleven murders. Great retro atmosphere, brisk pace, decent acting and plenty of suspense make The Angel another Spanish hit that should not be missed by fans of gangsters and Spaniards alike.
