Donald "Sully" Sullivan is a sixty-year-old construction worker living in North Bath, New York. Sullivan has no steady work, no love and no money. Estranged for years from his family, he suddenly finds himself face-to-face with his son Peter, an out-of-work college professor with a turbulent marriage. However, Sully just may have a chance to turn things around and piece his life back together again. Most of the eccentric locals of North Bath are betting against him, including his occasional employer, Carl Roebuck and Carl's attractive, neglected wife. But his eighth-grade teacher Miss Beryl, who is now his landlady, thinks her former student may have one last glimmer of potential left in him. (texto oficial do distribuidor)

inglês Paul Newman manages to sell every line, because he was, is, and will always be the greatest dude. Otherwise the film just kind of flows along languidly, with emotions gliding ever so lightly over the surface in a story could be told in two lines, and if you happened to step away for a few minutes while watching it, you would not miss anything crucial. Basically, a classic late Benton. ()
