Mosley e a sua família de Torifantes de quatro patas vivem numa quinta isolada que pertence a Simon, um camponês sombrio e mesquinho. Uma noite, após passar o dia inteiro a lavrar, Mosley é surpreendido pelo filho Rue que lhe diz que descobriu algo mágico na floresta próxima da quinta. Bera, a esposa grávida de Mosley, encoraja-o a ir com o filho. Embora cansado, Mosley segue o filho floresta adentro e descobre o motivo do entusiasmo de Rue: uma gruta com gravuras ancestrais nas paredes. São Torifantes, semelhantes a Mosley e Rue, mas que andam em duas patas, com as Costas Direitas! Seriam assim os Torifantes do passado? O que teria acontecido para se tornarem criaturas sem mãos e de costas arqueadas? É isto que Mosley irá tentar descobrir, partindo numa aventura incrível para tentar libertar a sua família. Beast of Burden is at first glance an unremarkable animated Chinese-New Zealand co-production that probably won't make a dent in the world due to lack of viewers, which is quite a shame because after watching it I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Even though it's primarily a children's film, it still deals with "adult stuff" and has an almost horror feel at times (the line with the hunter). Watching it, you can't help but notice the clear parallels to themes such as slavery or (more recently) species extinction. In terms of animation, Beast of Burden is rather intimate, but it doesn't offend, and I think the goats definitely deserve the viewer's attention.
