What some people do for a living! A medical examiner has the unenviable task of cutting up bodies and prying into their intestines. As the saying goes: it’s a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. On a weekday night in Hong Kong, one such dude is diligently at work alongside his assistant. Then, without bothering to knock, three armed men barge in, their faces hidden behind goblin masks. They demand a bullet lodged inside a corpse that was recently brought in. Why they want the piece of metal and what their exact identity is, remains a mystery at first. Soon, a cat-and-mouse game ensues between the medic and his assailants, with both sides trying to get the upper hand. (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival)

Um thriller de ação rápida, instalado numa moderna morgue de Hong Kong, com lutas físicas nutritivas. Nada de novo, mas uma recordação digna dos bons velhos tempos dos filmes de ação de McTiernan/Harlin. Só a banda sonora demasiado barata poderia ter sido excluída. [Sitges FF]

A história sobre os trabalhadores de uma morgue ultra-moderna de grande tamanho que enfrentam um assalto à mão armada na véspera de Natal não faz sentido mesmo no seu tema básico e consiste de uma sequência de ação pouco interessante de personagens que correm e lutam por corredores, escritórios e pavilhões de congelação, que é filmada de uma forma agradavelmente rápida e enérgica, mas não assume muita lógica e verosimilhança no comportamento dos personagens e na realização de situações concretas. Os estúpidos vilões, os heróis ingenuamente positivos, tentando constantemente superar os atacantes armados a qualquer custo, e o feeling geral do filme fazem lembrar alguns thrillers de ação dos anos 90. Se desligar o seu cérebro, o filme pode servir como um petisco bastante divertido, mas não se pode realmente esperar mais dele.

After a long time, a passable Hong Kong flick with the awesome Nick Cheung. Three masked assailants attack a morgue on Christmas Day and demand a bullet from a corpse, but of course things don’t go as planned. Cheung is a reasonably intelligent pathologist so he gives them all a good run for their money, and I also enjoyed the decently dosed action which, while not surprising today, doesn't offend. 65%.

Renny Harlin is kind of back in action. Bodies at Rest is quite evocative of his sequel to Die Hard - if it took place in a morgue, which really was the thing that was attracting me to the screening of this movie. It really is such an old-school action thriller in Chinese style. The screenplay is fairly average and it may not be advisable to think too deeply about some aspects of the plot, but the fresh and dynamic direction constantly throws some action in the way to distract the audience from such things. It neither inspires nor offends. [Sitges 2019]
