Depois de Lyndon B. Johnson (Woody Harrelson), o poderoso líder da maioria no Senado, perder as primárias democratas de 1960 para o Senador John F. Kennedy (Jeffrey Donovan), acaba por aceitar o lugar de vice-presidente na campanha do seu jovem rival. No entanto, e apesar da sua experiência legislativa e aguçados instintos políticos, Johnson vê-se ignorado e esquecido assim que ganham as eleições presidenciais. Tudo isso muda a 22 de novembro de 1963, quando o Presidente Kennedy é assassinado e Johnson, com o apoio da sua mulher Lady Bird (Jennifer Jason Leigh), é repentinamente catapultado para o cargo de Presidente. Enquanto a nação faz o luto, Johnson tem de se confrontar com o procurador geral Bobby Kennedy (Michael Stahl-David), um adversário de longa data, e com o senador da Geórgia Richard Russell (Richard Jenkins), seu antigo mentor, para conseguir honrar o legado de JFK e assim instituir a histórica Lei dos Direitos Civis de 1964. Woody Harrelson is the star of this film, which is a bit of a shame. It’s not because he's bad - he's great, but there are other actors here who definitely have the chops to play major league's and not just fairly boring sidekicks. This film had much more potential than just showing off Woody's skills and the mastery of makeup artists, even though it still sometimes looks artificial.

Considering the interesting and sensitive topic it deals with, it is a reprehensibly wasted potential for a good drama. The only good thing is Woody Harrelson’s one-man show, the rest of the cast is atrociously bland, including JFK. A tired biopic drama that offers nothing to make it interesting, or perhaps even rewarding. That is, unless you are terribly impressed by the boisterous and well-masked Woody in a charismatic role he can do.
