Half a million people die from malaria annually, the majority in Sub-Saharan Africa. The economic losses are in the billions of dollars. Despite ongoing extensive research, there are still no effective weapons against mosquito-transmitted parasites. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets harm the environment, drugs are often not effective, and prevention is too costly. A modest plant, artemesia, might resolve things. Ugandan pharmacologist Patrick Ogwang gave a tea made from it to workers at a flower farm by Lake Victoria and reduced the number of the ill by 85%. But pharma companies would lose profits because of natural medicines. (One World)
