The Boogey Man

Ulli Lommel é um estranho, gosta de mistérios e tem ideias loucas. E essa é uma combinação de ouro no género de filme de terror. O seu Boogeyman é um filme de terror misterioso, lento e fortemente atmosférico que pede emprestado o tema de Halloween - O Regresso do Mal de Carpenter e o envolve no estilo psicadélico de Dario Argento. O realizador parece ler nas entrelinhas, mostrando-nos muitas vezes o que não nos é mostrado noutros lugares e, pelo contrário, evitando o cliché literal que seria apenas um verdadeiro travão da narrativa. Um filme bizarro que não vai provocar medo nem assustar, mas que o vai deixar a olhar em delírio de boca aberta ou aborrecer até à morte. Um assunto barato em termos de produção, mas extremamente notável em termos de direção, argumento, imagens e música. Com estes parâmetros semelhante a Fantasma de Don Coscarelli. As minhas 4* são um pouco de guilty pleasure. (28/10/2003)

This is a very curious example of a particular type of horror movie, in which the maker’s inventive vision is thrashed and beaten by bad directing and screenwriting incompetence. With The Boogeyman, Ulli Lommel combines a lot of interesting ideas and visual treats (especially in the ostentatious finále, with the really iconic playing around with the reflections in the fragments of the mirror). However, despite that, he puts it all together in such a questionable and haphazard way, that it all seemed so fragmented and incoherent. I would probably end up rating this as a terrible movie based on an excellent vision, which at times breaks its own established rules, however, there are still some quite jaw-dropping moments for the audience. In any case, Tim Krog's distinctive electronic music puts the movie on a higher level than it probably deserves! (05/09/2019)
