The film captures a slice of Americana through the back door. Bob (Matt Dillon) is an energetic junkie who leads his wife (Kelly Lynch) and another couple on a reckless spree of drugstore robberies, for drugs. A film like Requiem for a Dream is much more depressing and darker in its portrayal of drugs, but nonetheless, Gus Van Sant's Drugstore Cowboy shows that drug use isn't all fun and games, and that your own actions can catch up to you if you want to turn your life around. The ending is good, though perhaps a bit too symbolic, which bothered me a bit.
