The Haunting (1999)

inglês I promise I'll listen to my friends next time they give me advice like "Don't watch The Haunting, it's stupid, a waste of time". God, that WAS stupid. To the point it surprised me. A horror movie that's not scary... mysteries that aren't mysterious... actors who barely act at all...basically crap. One star for the design of the (un)haunted mansion, the second for Goldsmith's music, which does make something out of the zero atmosphere here and there. But there's not much there.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009)

inglês I don't know the book, so (perhaps fortunately) I can't compare them, but: All of the monsters that appeared in the film were really interesting (it's a pity that some of them didn't get more space), with Reilly's vampire being the best, followed by Dafoe, Salma Hayek and Jane Krakowski (I could watch these two all the time). The main character is such a typical teenager who comes to happiness and moral lessons, while the rest of the characters (except for two memorable villains) are worthless. Including those demented parents. I liked the music, the special effects and the visuals are decent... It works perfect as relaxation. Undemanding fun with some really good jokes by John C. Reilly. Three and a half = above average.

Os Argonautas (1963)

inglês Three and a half stars rounded up. Three of those are credited to Ray Harryhausen - his special effects are pretty much the only reason I watched Jason and the Argonauts. The story is a classic fable that everyone knows, slightly modified and played by actors who, however, do not act much. Oh well. As I say - Harryhausen, Harryhausen and Harryhausen again. The final battle with the skeletons is already legendary, as is the taming of the harpy or the revived bronze statue of the giant Talos. Bernard Herrmann's music gets half a star - 3/4 of it is not spectacular, but the motif used in the birth of the skeletons is excellent, simple and impressive. Clash of the Titans remains (and will remain) unsurpassed.

O Sonho de Cassandra (2007)

inglês Woody's slow-moving English affair, taking its time for an hour with careful character building, only to pick up a faster (but not fast) pace and head towards an ending that made me give it a fifth star.

007 - Ordem Para Matar (1963)

inglês If I have to pick one of Connery's best Bond films, then it's From Russia with Love. It’s the most interesting film in terms of plot and it doesn’t have a lot of action, but when it does, it's worth it. Be it the legendary (and rightly praised) train compartment fight, the helicopter chase or the gypsy camp ambush. One hundred percent honest work every time. As far as the plot goes, there is no shortage of interesting twists and turns, but the most fun of all is watching Bond and Romanov's evolving relationship. Add to that, of course, John Barry, Young's meticulous direction, which suits this slower but ever more suspenseful film more than anything else, Blofeld and the witch of all witches... You simply cannot be dissatisfied with it.

O Corpo da Mentira (2008)

inglês Well, that's the way it is. While most people were watching our hockey players advance to the World Championship finals, I was watching Body of Lies. And I really don't believe that the hockey was more exciting! A delicious performance by Mark Strong, the chubby office rat Crowe, a (traditionally) great DiCaprio... They all star in what I think is a perfect film that brought Ridley Scott and his crew of filmmakers to the Middle East for the fourth time. It was fascinating to watch Scott's work with the story - he sticks to one main storyline, then gradually packs in more and more, letting them weave in and out of each other with such ease that the viewer can follow everything without any issues, and it all culminates in a heart attack scene with the hammer in the lead role. Wow.

Gladiador (2000)

inglês Here we go again - the director's cut of the film has turned an already perfect film into an incredible, dimensional epic gem! To hell with all those who are picking at historical inaccuracies - it's not about them at all! Gladiator has a different message than a history book! This film is one of my greatest movie theater experiences ever (which the DVD version reminded me of), thanks to the almost holy trinity of Scott - Crowe - Zimmer.

Doce Liberdade (1986)

inglês Alan Alda took on (not only) filmmakers distorting historical events and it turned out great. Sweet Liberty entertains with his typical humor - gentle, sensitive, ironic and now and then unexpectedly "daring". Plus, when Alda has capable comedic counterparts (Hoskins, Caine and others), it's a joy to watch. I squealed with laughter the most during the scenes of Alda and Caine fencing and Alda and Caine in the car... And the roller coaster ride together with the final battle scene were also perfect.

007 - Contra Goldfinger (1964)

inglês Not surprisingly, many people think of Goldfinger when they hear the word "Bond" (although they may not even know it). It's not Connery's best contribution to the franchise, but it certainly is flawless. You want humor? It's here. You want suspense, you want action scenes? Espionage? You get them. All of this presented in a literal golden coat with one of the best villains having one of the most interesting (and simplest) plans of all. John Barry (as usual) excels again and the music is like clockwork. And I haven’t even mentioned Pussy Galore, one of my favorite Bond girls. Best scenes: The opening brawl, Bond's "tuning in" to Goldfinger's waves, the whole Geneva part and of course the finale at Fort Knox.

Na půdě aneb Kdo má dneska narozeniny? (2009)

inglês Full stars, there’s nothing to worry about here! This fantastic film would take a ninety year old back to his childhood. Seriously! Perfectly chosen voices for all the characters, an excellent Jiří Lábus, perfect music by Pavlíček (I WANT a soundtrack) and most importantly - an animated world full of details that is truly alive!
