Terra Mater: Das Lied der Gibbons

In 2017 the world learned of the discovery of a new type of gibbon, a close relative of man. It was given a name from the Star Wars lore – Skywalker. But the fear for its survival soon soured the joyous news. There is only a handful of Skywalkers on the border of China and Myanmar, and they are so scattered in the hills that they cannot find each other. The limited options often drive the gibbons to solutions with unfortunate genetic consequences. A team of researchers decided not to give up and found a way for two lonely gibbons to communicate from afar – they made them their own dating app. But an act like this poses an important dilemma – should scientists interfere with nature’s intentions?
