Cyrano ama desde a infância a sua prima Roxanne, mas nunca teve a coragem de lhe declarar essa paixão. Ele julga-se desfigurado, devido ao seu longo nariz, e admite nunca poder vir a ser amado por uma mulher. Pelo seu lado, Roxanne, que nutre por Cyrano uma enorme simpatia, tem como ideal de homem a beleza e o espírito. Ao conhecer Christian, Roxanne apaixona-se por ele, mas este é tímido e não consegue manter uma relação normal com uma mulher. É então que Cyrano ajuda Christian, escrevendo-lhe longas e belas cartas de amor que vão tornar ainda maior a paixão de Roxanne por Christian. Só que Christian não vai aguentar por muito tempo esta situação e Roxanne vai então descobrir o autor de tão belas cartas de amor... (Alambique Filmes)

I liked the more intimate and black-and-white version from 1950 a little bit more, although it was made by Americans. Gérard is great, it's hard to find fault with him, but the grander execution didn't quite fit with it for me. Furthermore, the other characters seemed quite unremarkable to me, even though they also have their merits, not just Cyrano.

Art above entertainment. Cyrano has excellent leading actors (especially Gérard Depardieu), exquisitely crafted dialogue lyrics and first-rate make-up. On the other hand, it has the classic problems of film adaptations of theatre plays: cardboard sets, deliberate overacting in basically all supporting roles and a bland screenplay. Theatre plays are hard to adapt, like video games, and few of them work out well. This one is bearable, but I wouldn't consider it an outright hit.
